Why Sunflower Spiritual Direction?
Any time I try to cultivate sunflowers in a particular place or pattern, they defy my efforts. So, I fill my bird feeders with sunflower seeds and these feathered friends do the sowing! The scattered seeds take root and grow, thanks to the soil, sun and rain. God reminds me continually that I cannot force their growth—nor my own! Sunflowers follow the movement of the sun on its daily orbit, each stalk stretching toward the source of its strength. New seeds push their way through the center of the flower where there is always room for growth. These remarkable plants flourish, sustaining flocks of birds as winter approaches.
In spiritual direction, our conversation invokes a power beyond ourselves. We pause, breathe deeply and loosen our grip. We recognize our limits. Our sacred sharing enables us to turn more readily toward God. We name where we see God at work, clearing obstacles to our joy. We expect to be surprised!
